Mieczyslaw Szmerling was a Jew who had moved away from the Community. In the Ghetto, he became a Jewish Police officer. A particularly cruel man, he commanded the police unit of the Umschlagplatz during the mass deportations, and was merciless. He barely escaped an attempt on his life by the JFO.
